Costs & Planning

Why prices vary so much, what to compare between quotes, and a simple checklist to keep your project organized.

What Affects Window and Door Replacement Pricing

Two homes can get very different prices for what sounds like the same project. These are the main reasons:

FactorWhy it matters
Number of windows or doorsMore units means more product and labor, though larger projects can sometimes be scheduled more efficiently.
SizeLarger and non-standard sizes generally cost more to make and install.
StyleCasements, bays, bows, specialty shapes and multi-panel doors are more involved than simple styles.
MaterialsVinyl, wood, fiberglass, steel and composite products sit at different price points.
GlassTriple-pane, special coatings, gas fills, safety glass and decorative glass add to the cost.
Installation conditionsUpper floors, tight access, brick or stone openings, and the type of installation all affect labor.
Trim and finishingNew interior trim, exterior wrapping, paint or stain can be included or extra.
Additional workRepairing rot, resizing openings, or other carpentry found during the project.

Why a Firm Price Usually Requires Project Details

Online price ranges can be a helpful starting point, but they can't account for your home's openings, the condition of the framing, or the exact products you choose. A firm price usually requires accurate measurements and, often, an in-person look at the windows or doors.

Be cautious about any price that seems final before anyone has seen or measured your project.

How to Compare Quotes

The lowest number isn't always the best value, and the highest isn't always the best quality. Compare the whole picture:

  • Scope: Are the same windows and doors included in each quote? Removal, disposal, trim and cleanup?
  • Products: The same style, material, glass package and options?
  • Installation: How will the work be done, and by whom?
  • Warranties: What's covered for the product and the labor, and for how long?
  • Total price: The full amount after any discounts, not just an advertised price per window.

Get it in writing. Ask for an itemized quote that lists products, quantities, what's included and what isn't. It makes comparisons much easier.

Questions to Ask When Comparing Quotes

  • What exactly is included, and what would cost extra?
  • What happens if you find damage after removing the old windows or doors?
  • Who handles any permits, if needed?
  • What are the payment terms and schedule?
  • How long is the quote valid?
  • What do the product and installation warranties cover?
